GIS analyst Seri Supparathid said the Big Bag levee along the northern city gates will help slow down water flow, but won’t stop it. This will buy time for BMA to drain off water. Chulalongkorn sluice gate water level is lower, as are other nearby gates. A big water mass still surrounds Bangkok. Klong Bang Khen has to shoulder heavy responsibility but its ability to drain off water is limited. Dry Nonthaburi’s Mueang district may see water overflowing from this canal. Khlong Bangsue also needs to drain off more if flood is to be contained. Victory monument is still a risky area depending on BMA’s drainage capacity. On the Thon Buri side, nothing can be done to stop further inundation.
Dr Anond Snidvongs, a flood expert working for the Flood Relief and Operations Command said the current flood is not the fault of the current or previous government but is the result of decades of neglect and an unusually long rainny season. What compounds the problem is that it rained continuously for four months due to several storms blowing into Thailand either depressions or tropical storms. …
This unusual weather can happen again in a near future, but may not happen every year. It is not confined only Thailand but on a global scale. Vietnam, China also faced so many storms but they were better prepared as they are the frontlines and have faced so many storms over the years. Local communities do not understand the purpose of sluice gates. We must also accept the fact that low-lying areas must face floods. Each gate cannot help much but all the gates work together can help manage waterflow. Enormous damage from floods this year due to uncoordinated development of infrastructures and commercial development. He reiterated that if left alone, all Bangkok will face the same flood level as Ayutthaya.
